Actually CALL the phone number

With my recent host (and some in the past), I have learned the importance to actually call the phone number before signing up. A lot of people see a web hosting service provider offering (or publishing) their phone number on their website for everyone to see and they think;

“Great, they have phone support or at the very least, some physical way to talk to a real person in an emergency!”

Today I’ve been calling a few numbers and you’d be surprised how useless many of them really are.

  • Fax machine (was listed as support)
  • voice mailbox
  • discontinued number
  • dead end recording (basically tells you go online)
  • wrong number
  • busy signal
  • invalid number
  • someone’s home number (but it was the right one)
  • no answer (rings forever)

Those are the ones I have encountered today. So do not just trust that a website displays a phone number. Call it.

And if given the option between sales or support, choose the support option, just to see if they are there. Because I find “sales” is commonly always available.

Although be good enough not to hold support up with your questions, as someone else maybe in need of them. Rather just either hand up or tell them you entered the wrong extension, then speak to sales.
