Advice needed – two shared or VPS?

Big on Hosting. Unlimited Space & Unlimited Bandwidth

Hello all,

For last few months I’m pondering switching from Dewahost. I’m with them for more than 10 years, but this one was particularly bad – I’m talking about up to 12h downtimes in few occasions and many short ones. Recently they migrated to cloud, but I don’t see much improvement (2x1h downtime in last two weeks). Adding to consideration that I’m paying for this kind “reliability” $25/mo (5 GB disk / 100 GB bandwidth / 15 addon domains / 15 MySQL dbs), one must ask: why I waited so long?

In addition to this, I’m also using Dreamhost shared account (“unlimited”) for websites that aren’t that important, as a “playground” for test websites/apps, Subversion ($10.95/mo), internal project management website, etc. Currently I’m using around 4 GB of space and small bandwidth. And guess what – this “unlimited” account seems to be more stable than the “better” one.

Anyway, for few important websites (Dewahost replacement), this is what I need:

– Linux
– Around 5 GB of disk space, maybe 10 GB
– 100 GB bandwidth should suffice
– Unlimited (or plenty) addon domains
– Unlimited (or plenty) MySQL databases
– Automated daily backups
– Good reviews
– Raw log files access
– $5-10/mo price

These would be nice:

– Dedicated IP (at least one, possibility to buy additional in the future)
– SSH access
– CPanel

Server location and phone support are not important.

I’m occasionally reading reviews here and I boiled it down to three choices: Stablehost, Hawkhost and MDDHosting (in that order). No surprises here, right?

However, now I’m starting to think: why I don’t ditch Dreamhost “playground” account completely and combine everything into one low-level VPS account? Do you think it would be a good idea? I will be able to install SVN to VPS, right? Sorry if it’s a stupid question, I never considered this option before, so I don’t know much about how exactly it works.

My concerns are about putting all eggs in one basket and about the time needed for managing server. I would probably buy CPanel add-on, if it’s not too expensive, just to make sure I do things more quickly than through Linux shell. I’m not completely ignorant, but I’m afraid I don’t have enough experience to do things quickly, compared to working with CPanel. Not to mention security concerns.

So, in a nutshell, I’m now tore apart between multiple choices:

1. Dreamhost + Stablehost/Hawkhost/MDDHosting
2. VPS + possibly CPanel
3. Shared hosting with 10-20 GB + free/inexpensive SVN server (any suggestions?)
4. Dreamhost only (well, this one just occurred to me, but I’m not sure I’m brave enough, regardless of good uptime lately)

Do you have any suggestions for me? And thank you for taking time to read this, sincerely.
