Dedicated, VPS… Help!

Big on Hosting. Unlimited Space & Unlimited Bandwidth

Hi, guys.

I really need some quick help here. Thanks to whoever reply to this.

I currently have 2 simple wordpress websites and 1 project management system running on a shared hosting at hostgator. All three of them have lots of high quality pictures, I’m using about 100GB of space and 100GB of band monthly.

All my company emails are IMAP and that means we have about 30GB of emails online too.

Since my business is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, hostgator seemed like a good option since we get 200ms when pinging. I know it’d be better in a Miami based server.

Problems started when we had to outsource some of the wordpress work and we had to provide cPanel acess so that the freelancer could open phpmy admin. Theres no way to prevent him to acess our email accounts through cpanel as it seems.

After that, hostgator also went down many times this month, which didn’t help us or our SEO rankins. Speaking of SEO, I just made a trace in my server and found out that I am in the same server as a few XXX websites are. Not to mention the spamhaus blocks – every time I email someone (doesen’t matter which domain I’m using) it goes straight to the spam box. Pretty annoying.

Knowing that our website is growing every month, I think its time to move from HG (we’ve been there for like 5 years) to a VPS or private server.

As our data is kind of confidential (we manage real estate), I thought I oculd go for one of these $49 unmanaged servers specials. That would give me a better ping (if they were in Miami), get rid of the email blocking problem, maybe some SEO improvement (as I’d be out of that shared hosting IP), more freedom of work and even some kinf of enternainment (I could, for instance, use the free power to host a ventrilo or temporary game server for friends?).

Going for a VPS would be like just going to a “better” shared hosting, right? It’s almost the same cost.

Unless a good VPS could be better than those dedicated specials that we see on reliablesite, OVH, quadranet…?

Hope to get some opinions.

Thank you very much guys.
