Fed up with Dreamhost

Big on Hosting. Unlimited Space & Unlimited Bandwidth

Hello,

I’m looking for a web hoster who doesn’t charge the earth for a relatively good RAM limit.

I’m currently with Dreamhost and as I’m sure you know they impose an invisible cap on websites hosted with them. They refuse to tell me the cap due to “security issues”. However by the looks of it, the cap is around 64MB.

My website was hitting the 60MB mark and it kept going down because of that. I’ve now stripped it back to consistently hit 42MB and never over 45MB, but the website continues to time out. According to support, that’s because it’s still hitting the RAM limit. Because Dreamhost don’t officially admit to their 64MB cap, I’m having a hard time arguing my website is operating within reason.

Frankly I’ve lost faith in their service. I’m doing all the compromising at the moment and I’m not getting any helpful feedback in return. I’ve really compromised the site’s function to get it down to 42MB and it’s now running on a skeleton service. If I were to strip back any more, it would negate having a site at all.

Reviews elsewhere suggest others have inexplicably experienced problems with the RAM limit, and I’m beginning to warm to conspiracy theories that Dreamhost use it as an excuse to disguise their own server issues. This is especially poignant as the last upgrade my site had was in April, and it first experienced issues six months later – when a lot of other people began to complain of outages. Coincidence?

Unfortunately although my website has grown in popularity, it still has a small budget, and the upgrade options Dreamhost have presented to me aren’t suitable. I’d like to move to another web hoster with a larger RAM limit but otherwise similar options to the standard Dreamhost plan. Any ideas appreciated?

Tiffany
