Is This a Typical Hosting Experience?

Actually…it’s a near hosting experience because I haven’t managed to get anything working yet…

I’ve been a web developer for a while but always on servers hosted in the company’s data center. This is my first experience of using shared hosting for my own website.

I chose register.com because I thought the service would be good.

Their tech support typically take a minimum of 3 days to respond to me. Which shouldn’t have been a problem because with many years experience I thought it would be plain sailing.

It wasn’t. At all!

This weekend I attempted to upload my site. I started configuring the DB and have immediately run into problems. First I could connect with SQL Management Studio then because I deleted the empty DB through the web interface and created it again I am unable to connect at all – even after waiting several hours. And that is it. Until tech supp get back to me I can’t do a thing. Is it usual for such basic tasks as creating an empty DB and connecting to it to fail? Is this level of service provision usual?

I paid 136USD for a year’s hosting (that did not include registration which I paid for seperately) so I thought I’d receive an ok service – or at least access to tools that work.

I might expect config changes to take 10 minutes or so to ripple through but not several hours.

Is this a typical problem with hosting companies?
