Merry Christmas from Hostgator! Give us back your IP address!

Big on Hosting. Unlimited Space & Unlimited Bandwidth
I have a shared resellers plan with Host Gator. The plan has been in effect for 2.8 years and rarely did I ever contact them for support.

When I first signed up I was a little distraught when I learned that they don’t allow me to install SSL certificates on my own reseller service. When my customer contacts me for SSL I have to resell Host Gator’s SSL certificate or pay them to install one of my SSL certificates… Oh and not to mention the first time I contacted them to install my SSL they couldn’t get it to work the first time and made me look silly in front of a managed web hosting customer…

This all started on December 23rd 2013 when I received this email after I awoke for my day.

Hello, Due to the current global shortage of IPv4 addresses, we are required to reclaim any dedicated IPs on your account which do not have any active SSL certificate.

To avoid reclamation, you can either purchase an SSL certificate from us or provide us with an SSL that you have purchased elsewhere. If you choose to provide us with an SSL to install for you, the SSL cannot be a self signed certificate. Our SSL ordering/installation forms can be found at:

***NOTE: You have 72 hours to submit your SSL request before the dedicated IP will be reclaimed. To keep the dedicated IP, please reply back with the ticket ID of the SSL form that you have completed.***

The domain(s) currently using dedicated IPs with an expired SSL on your account are:

Again, once one of the SSL forms at has been completed, please reply back on this ticket so that we may halt the IP reclamation process. We apologize for any inconvenience.

We can also be contacted at:

This was upsetting. This would cause all the security, APIs and other automation tasks to fail because they would start refusing any data from external sources that didn’t match specific IP. The website would then be moved to a random shared IP… That does not look good to my customer. Due to this I became irate with Host Gator. I have put up with their corporate **** enough and this is the last straw…

I contacted them by phone gave them my options to make me go away happy.
1. Leave my dedicated IP alone and ignore it.
2. Install one of my SSL certificates for free.

They (Jr. Administrator Henry, M) actively refused both and then began to give me the same turd about running out of IPs and needing to reclaim mine unless I either A: Pay them a lot for an SSL cert, or B: Pay them to install my SSL cert…

I understand the IPv4 address are gone but what I don’t understand is why they sold me dedicated access to this IP without considering that they couldn’t sustain the service 2 years later.

Now I get to spend my Christmas eve migrating clients to a different provider.
